The Jimmy Watson Trophy has Bleasdale’s name on it!

There are many awards and respected trophies presented within the wine industry each year, and while Bleasdale has a large collection of wins to its name, there was always one award that we believe to be the epitome of excellence in the wine industry; the cherry on top of the cupcake or the golden star on our homework…The Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy.

We are absolutely thrilled that as we gear up to celebrate our 170th birthday next year, Bleasdale Vineyards can officially add this prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the Best One or Two-Year-Old Red Wine to our trophy cabinet for our 2018 Wild Fig SGM.

Bleasdale was up against over a thousand ‘young’ red wines at the recent 2019 Royal Melbourne Wine Awards, and at just $20 a bottle, we knew it was a brilliant wine that is unquestionably excellent value for money.

Established in 1962 in honour of the late Jimmy Watson, this trophy was previously awarded to some of the most recognisable names in the Australian wine industry, including Wolf Blass, Penfolds, Hardy’s, Wynns, Cape Mentelle and Seppelt just to name a few. And on Thursday night, we finally added our name to this list of outstanding Australian wineries with the presentation of this highly respected award, for a young wine that we couldn’t be prouder of.

As the only winery in Langhorne Creek crafting this blend, our 2018 Wild Fig SGM is Shiraz-dominant, with 73% Shiraz accompanied by 24% Grenache and 3% Mourvèdre. Fruit for the Wild Fig comes from a number of vineyards in Langhorne Creek, including some beautiful old Grenache and Shiraz vines here at Bleasdale. Some of the Shiraz even comes from our Powder Monkey Vineyard. The blend is uniquely Bleasdale and one that we feel really showcases some of the best of what the region has to offer.

This is only our second year producing the Wild Fig SGM. It was made using simple winemaking techniques, utilising older puncheons and some tank maturation to maintain freshness and vitality in the wine. And while it’s different to other wines in our portfolio, this experimental blend pulled through and delivered a result that we had previously only ever dreamed of!

Spicy and aromatic, generous and silky… This 2018 Wild Fig SGM is best in its class and goes to show that an affordable wine like this can deliver huge results with the right techniques, optimal fruit maturation and most of all, big dreams and a vision!
